What's inside a reborn doll kit
A complete reborn kit gives you everything to start the journey. Inside each kit, you'll find an unpainted vinyl sculpt (head and limbs), a cloth body ready to assemble, glass or acrylic eyes, glass weighting beads for newborn heft, and the basic assembly hardware — cable ties, zip locks, polyfill stuffing. Most kits also include a step-by-step illustrated guide covering the assembly basics from box-opening to finished baby.
What's not included is the artist tools you'll add over time — paints, brushes, hair-rooting needles. We carry those separately in our accessories collection, or you can source them locally. The kit gives you the canvas; you bring the artistry.
The five steps from kit to finished reborn
Reborning a kit is a process — not a single afternoon. Here's what the journey looks like, broken down.
Unbox & Inspect
Check all pieces, wash vinyl gently with soap, let dry completely before painting.
Paint in Layers
Apply 8–12 thin layers of doll paint, baking between each. Builds translucent skin depth.
Root the Hair
Insert hair strand-by-strand with a rooting needle. Mohair or fine synthetic. Patient work — 10–30 hours.
Set Eyes & Weight
Place glass eyes in the sockets, fill the cloth body with glass beads and polyfill for newborn weight.
Assemble & Dress
Attach limbs to body with cable ties, dress your finished baby, name them. They're yours.
Who reborn kits are for
First-time reborners curious about the craft, looking for an affordable way to try it (kits start around $40, vs $150+ for a finished doll). Hobbyists who enjoy the meditative process of layered painting and patient hair rooting. Reborn artists building their portfolio with consistent base sculpts to develop their signature style. Gift-givers looking for an unusual creative gift for a hands-on family member who'd love a months-long project. Stay-at-home parents and retirees seeking a fulfilling, screen-free creative practice.
If you've ever held a reborn and wondered "could I make one?" — yes, you absolutely can. The kit is where it starts.
How long does it take to finish a kit?
Honest answer: 20 to 80 hours of work, spread over 2 to 8 weeks. The painting alone takes 8–15 hours over multiple sessions (each paint layer needs to cure). Hair rooting is the longest single step — count 10–30 hours depending on how detailed you want the hairline. Basic assembly (eyes, weighting, body) takes 2–4 hours.
It's a craft of patience. People who try reborning often describe it as "meditative therapy" — slow, focused, and deeply satisfying. The finished doll isn't just a baby. It's hours of your hands made visible.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need experience to assemble a reborn doll kit?
No — most of our kits are designed with beginners in mind and include illustrated step-by-step guides. The basic assembly (attaching limbs, weighting the body, setting eyes) takes 2–4 hours and requires no special skills. Advanced finishing (painting, hair rooting) is optional and can be developed over time as you grow into the craft.
What tools do I need beyond the kit?
For basic assembly: scissors, a cable tie tool, and a small funnel for the weighting beads — all standard household tools. For painting and hair rooting (optional advanced steps), you'll need acrylic doll paints, a rooting needle, and mohair or fine synthetic hair. We carry these in our accessories collection.
How long does it take to finish a reborn kit?
20 to 80 hours of work spread over 2 to 8 weeks, depending on your level of detail. Painting takes 8–15 hours over multiple sessions (each layer needs to cure). Hair rooting is the longest single step (10–30 hours). Basic assembly takes 2–4 hours. It's a craft of patience, not a single afternoon.
How much do reborn doll kits cost?
Our reborn doll kits range from around $40 for beginner-friendly small kits to $200 for premium full-body silicone kits with advanced sculpts. The most popular range is $60–$120 — kits with high-quality vinyl, included accessories, and clear assembly guides.
Can I return an unopened reborn doll kit?
Yes — unopened kits are returnable within 14 days of delivery for a full refund. Opened or partially used kits cannot be returned for hygiene and quality reasons. We recommend ordering one kit to test the craft before stocking up on multiple sculpts.
Is reborn-making suitable as a creative hobby or therapy?
Yes — many people describe reborning as a deeply meditative practice, similar to needlework or model-building. The slow, layered work of painting and hair rooting promotes focus and mindfulness. It's increasingly recommended in art therapy contexts and as a screen-free creative outlet for retirees, caregivers, and anyone seeking patient handwork.
